People probably think I’m a bad dresser. No, seriously, they probably do. I wear sweatpants and t-shirts most of the time because I have a bajillion of them (that’s what happens when you play a college sport… you get tons of free t-shirts in exchange for having no social life). The key here is that dressing in t-shirts and wearing my jeans from high school is CHEAP for me. It’s not that I have bad taste. It’s that, honestly, I’m too frugal to go out and buy myself a new wardrobe.
I’ve learned, though, that I CAN add to my wardrobe little by little and spice it up a bit. Here are my favorite tips for dressing better (well, better than sweats and t-shirts) on a budget.
1) If a friend is getting rid of clothes, ask if you can have anything they’re throwing out! Seriously, a few of my favorite items are from an old roomie who was getting rid of stuff. Including a super cute teal purse I get TONS of compliments on.
2) Frequent consignment shops or other places that sell used clothing. These shops sell shoes, belts, earrings, scarves, hats, and sunglasses, in addition to clothing.
3) Figure out what looks good on you, and don’t waste money on items that don’t. Some things might look good on other people but not on you. That’s ok. Only invest in things that you LOVE and that make you look FABULOUS. For me, it’s bright clothing and clothing that accentuates my small waist (and downplays my child-bearing-sized hips).4) Accessorize! The right jewelry or shoes and handbag can totally take an outfit from “drab” to “fab,” and accessories are often pretty cheap!
