How To: Increase Your Blog Traffic

Hello chicas. A few weeks ago, someone commented on a post of mine saying that they wished they knew how to get more people visiting and commenting their blog - this inspired me to write about a few of the tips I have for getting your blog noticed!

Large Photos - personally I think it looks much better when the photos on a blog post are quite big. When I upload a photo, I always make sure to hover over it and set it to X-Large. Posting tiny little pictures can turn people away - you took the time to take the photo, so show it off in all of its glory! I think it also looks much better when all of the photos are the same size too - I try my best to take all of my photos landscape, so they look nice and uniform on my homepage :)

Comment on Other Blogs - taking the time to leave comments on other blogs makes a world of difference! If you've read a post and loved it, let them know - the owner of the blog is then more likely to come along to your blog and check it out in return.

Leave your Blog URL in Comments - make it easy for other bloggers to find your link by leaving it in your comment. I often leave mine as a click-through link, but I know some people don't like this so sometimes I will just leave the URL at the end of the comment. If other readers are interested in the comment you left, they might just follow your link and check out your blog too!

Reply to Comments - If you get comments on your blog, reply to them and check out their blog too. People are more likely to come back for more if they know their comments are being read and appreciated - I know I love to go back time and again to bloggers who always leave a thoughtful reply.

Turn Off Word Verification - I wrote a tutorial on how to do this here. It's automatic so you might not even realise you've got it turned on - go and check now!!

Don't Ask Others to Follow You! - Commenting "If you follow me, I'll follow you" is not cool... blogging isn't a numbers game. If you like a blog follow them, if you don't like it then move on. Expecting people to follow you back just because you followed them won't get you far.

I'm sure there is plenty more advice out there, but here are just the few that I find to be most important. What do you think of my tips? Have I missed anything? ♥

  1. I didn't even realise the photos on my blog were set to medium size so am going to change them all to XL! Thanks for this :) x

  2. Thanks for the post, great advice! I always feel bad about leaving my URL in comments in case I seem pushy, plus there's a fair few bloggers that refuse to even look twice at your comment if it's going to advertise your own blog. Seems ridiculous really, none of us would be where we are today if it weren't for a bit of shameless self-promotion!

    1. Yeah I totally agree, don't see a problem when people leave their blog URLs at all. I totally don't mind it on my blog that's for sure. Especially now Blogger is trying to push everyone to move over to Google+ profiles, it's a lot harder to find some people's blogs by clicking on their GFC name. xxx

  4. I think the word verification tip is spot on! I hate having to feel those in. Sometimes you want to just quickly leave a comment and not worry about doing a word verification (that half the time you can't read).

True about pictures too. It sucks when you love a blog, but the pictures let it down and you can't see the product that they are talking about properly!

I think it's okay to leave a blog address if you are going to take the time to actually read their post and comment on the content!

    1. Yeah actually good point - I hate when someone says "nice post" and leaves their link. Or when they say "beautiful pictures" when I haven't even posted any pictures. x

  5. Great tips, I agree with everything you said. although, I know some bloggers who hate when you leave your blog url in a comment. I have no idea why that bothers them :/
I'd love to know how do you do that click-through link, pretty please? :) x

    1. Yeah, I have no idea why, I don't mind it at all. I think it's a bit selfish actually to request that people don't leave their own links. I prefer it because it's easier to find their blogs.

Anything for you dear - this is the code you need : TEXT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO SEE

*Just remove the "HH" - I couldn't write the code correctly without it disappearing when I post

  11. Really good tips! I personally hate both word verification and those 'follow for a follow' type comments but totally don't mind people leaving their blog link so myself and others can go take a look!

I didn't realise about the photo size though - mine are all auto set to Large so I'll definitely be setting them to XL going forward! :-)

  14. brilliant post, Rachael! Funny that you should mention it because another blogger was talking on twitter about how off-putting word verification is and that people should turn it off and just moderate comments.. so I decided to change mine so as not to put people off. There was a really good post by a blogger on SEO that I think you would like. I'll have a look for the link and post it later on for you

  16. Great tips! I had word verification for a while until a visitor commented about how annoying they found it - all this time I thought I had turned it off! I definitely find captcha super annoying and aggravating at times. Reciprocity is really key in blogging, and also being genuinely interested in other people's blogs :)

  17. This is a great post, i think some people forget how important these are, i guess we learn over a while which ways are the best,
I used to use small pictures and have word verification.
I learnt from other blogs how to make my blog better.

  20. Commenting on other blogs in the same niche after creating a gravatar and leaving valuable feedback is certainly a good idea too!
I do that together with Guest posting.
