How To: Turn Off Word Verification for Comments

Hello chicas! I have something a little different for you today - I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials out there for this, but even so I'm often surprised by the number of people who have asked how to turn off the word verification that automatically comes up when you submit a comment to a blog post.

One of my worst bad habits when using a computer is that I seem to have hands that move at the speed of lightning. I often get so used to clicking in a certain pattern, that I'm always finding myself closing tabs before I mean to. The most annoying problem I have with this, is when I leave a comment and go to click the "x", forgetting to wait and see if the blog requires word verification to post the comment. I read so many blog posts and leave so many comments each day, that even I have to admit that it gets annoying to have to fill in the little form for half the comments you leave. In past #bbloggers chats on Twitter, I've noticed a few bloggers mention that they don't like to leave comments on websites that still have the word verification turned on - which is another part of what prompted me to create this tutorial.

I don't really know why Blogger includes this feature as an automatic option for new blogs - It's one of my biggest blogging bug bears and I think it'd make more sense for bloggers to turn it on themselves if they require it or are receiving a lot of spam. Personally, I find the best option is to require the moderation of comments - that way I know that I never miss a comment from one of my lovely readers! I don't think I've ever received spam comments before, but it's nice to know I can delete one before it gets published. Though, on that note, I'd like to honestly say that I've been very lucky and never had to delete a single comment for spam, negativity or otherwise. I guess I just have some pretty awesome readers ;)

So, if you aren't quite sure how to turn off the word verification and would like to know how, I've created a step-by-step guide, complete with screen shots - and honestly it couldn't be simpler! :)

Step 1: Head to your Blogger Dashboard

Step 2: Click on Settings

Step 3: Select the Post and Comments section

Step 4: At the bottom of the page is the Show Word Verification option. Click the drop down menu and set it to "No"

Step 5: Don't forget to save your changes!
That's it! It really is so easy to do!

How do you feel about the word verification, do you like to keep it turned on? Was this tutorial helpful? Is there any other tutorial you'd like to see? Let me know!♥

  2. I never even realised that I had this turned on! I've still got spam comments too! Somehow they still managed to get through the word verification!

    1. That's such a shame! That's the most frustrating thing I think, is that you don't even know that you have it turned on, only people who comment do! x

  3. Thank you!!! Often I will post a comment telling a new blogger if they have it on. People don't know and I use an iPad so it auto corrects for spelling and never recognizes the words. I planned on writing about this at some point too. Great tutorial. I will reference it.

    1. Thanks Sue! I'm glad this is proving useful. I really think blogger should do something to make bloggers aware that it's automatically on and that there is actually a way to turn it off! x

  4. Haha great guide! While word verification won't stop me from leaving a comment I hate the consent battle I seem to have in trying to work out what the letter and numbers are meant to be. At times i've had words upside down, written in Arabic - its crazily stupid!

    1. Yeah I'm definitely not the sort of person who would deliberately not leave a comment because of it, but it's definitely a frustrating and unnecessary addition to a blog! x

  5. Great walkthrough - I really hope more bloggers turn the word verification of as I can barely understand what the letters are meant to be most of the time! It drives me mad hehe :-)

    1. Same! I'm always shocked by how many people have it turned on still - but I guess you can easily go for ages without even knowing it's on! x

  7. This = awesome. I use Disqus so don't have this issue, but word verification gets on my nerves! Especially when you can't work out the numbers, which seems to be often! x

    1. I tried Disqus and the CommentLuv system but in the end I went back to the Blogger system when they FINALLY added a reply option. I was so happy! x

  8. Oh thanks for this! I didn't realise I had it on and just checked, ooops. I hate word verification and will still leave comments if bloggers have it, but I hate figuring out what some letters are too, its ridiculous.

    1. Glad I could help! It's so weird that they don't give you the option to turn it off when you do the first walk-through of the dashboard when you create your blog! x
