Life Lately

Hello my lovelies. It's been a seriously long time since I've actually written anything that wasn't a review, tutorial, outfit or something along those lines - so I thought it was about time I got you up to speed with what's been going on with me.

Most of you will know I had a bit of a blog hiatus from around January/February until about April/May. I suffer from anxiety, and while I'm not ready to share my story just yet (though I may one day), it had got to the point at the beginning of the year where I couldn't focus on much more than myself and my studies, and so I practically dropped off the face of the blogosphere. I tried to keep up but I just felt guilty trying so hard to blog and not really enjoying it. I decided to focus on my studies and give myself that last push to finish university after 5 long but wonderful years of hard work.

During that time I attended my first ever wedding (and an Indian one at that), 'DTR'ed' with Bob (love all of the abbreviations Tamara uses in Awkward!), got interviewed and accepted onto a PGCE course and suffered the loss of a friend and classmate. All of which meant lots of impromptu trips home, fitting in my ever mounting pile of assignments and trying to cope with losing a friend who should have graduated at my side.I'll definitely be blogging a whole bunch of things that I got up to over those few months, I didn't stop taking photos!

I graduated at the end of June with a 2.1 - I'm so incredibly proud of myself for this achievement, especially considering some of the awful things that happened right when my final assignments were due. I took part in The Color Run UK in Manchester at the weekend and it was so awesome I'm planning to make a yearly trip. This coming weekend I'll be heading to Hyper Japan as a member of the press which I'm super excited about too! I've got a lot of trips and exciting things in the works that I can't wait to share with you all!

I've been feeling a bit of a disconnect between me and you guys recently. Something definitely feels different about my blogger-reader relationship and I'd love to fix it. So I need to hear from you! :)

I'd also love to say an absolutely huge thank you to all of my amazing followers who have stuck with me, even when I disappeared a while. Also, a massive hello and welcome to all of my new followers. I hope you're enjoying your time on Just Rach.

Mostly, I've missed sharing a little bit of this and that with you all every now and then, so I'll be getting back to doing my update posts on the 1st of every month. In the meantime I've created a poll to get myself up to speed with what you all are and aren't enjoying about my blog. I'd seriously appreciate if you could take a second to pop your answer in. If you have any comments or want to add something I've not included, feel free to get in touch! Your feedback will only help Just Rach become better for you! :)

What would you like to see more of on Just Rach?

  1. Hi! I saw your post on UK bloggers. I also have anxiety, as well as some other 'issues', which disconnect me from blogging sometimes, so I get where you're coming from. Find your feet again at your own pace! (:

Loving the use of DTR, haha, I'm such an Awkward fangirl.

Am gonna peek back and have a look at your tutorials as I love these sorts of posts!

    1. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it :) It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who just feels a bit overwhelmed by it all sometimes. While I'm not ready to share it so publicly yet, I'm always keen to chat to other people going through the same sort of thing, so if you ever want to just drop me an email jsutrachblog@gmail.com.

Haha I love Awkward so much, sometimes I feel like it's so reflective of my life! :D

  2. Glad to hear that you're doing a lot better these days :) I'd love to read more beauty/lifestyle related posts and of course read about your daily life.

And huuuuge congratulations for graduating! I'm starting my 6th year in university and I should be graduating in 1-2 years depending on how fast my thesis will write itself... :D

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about everything that's happened to you this year, you've done so well in spite of all this! I hope everything has picked up for you now, though. I had to take a break from blogging at the end of last year due to PTSD/depression, so I totally understand how you sometimes have to focus on schoolwork and yourself. I felt so guilty about not blogging, but sometimes you just have to focus on making yourself better.

I'd definitely be interested in reading more lifestyle posts and outfit posts (just so I can stare, enviously, at your gorgeous clothes! :L). xx

  5. Hello Great Britain ! :)

Being a man, you can imagine that the main interest in JustRach has never been the topics related to fashion and cosmetics, even if I felt free to give my opinion about this or that topic, when the opportunity occured. For me, it is also a way to discover brittish people, especcially brittish women, of course, in the sense that all of you (I often follow some links I find here) are very different from french women. The thing that I notice in brittish people (especcially since I've been frequenting this blog, and since I've been watching Doctor Who) is the mix between classicism and modernity. You seem very tied to your identity and in the other hand, you try new things, and I really like this approach. By the way, and sorry for talking about politics, I think this is the reason why your Prince William and his wonderful wife Kate are so popular and appreciated in my country, because they represent this tend very well, according to me. Plus the fact both seem to appreciate us, of course. We like them very much, and my personal feeling is that William will make the United Kingdom make a great pace ahead, in time. You'll see it, I don't think I'm wrong. So this tendency for mixing classicism and modernity is the thing that I hold from my presence here. And as a curious person, who likes to know everything, I enjoy your blog for all the things it makes me discover about your country and its inhabitants. And its women of course lol... As a french, I'm obsessed with women lol....

This appart, and to get serious again, what I enjoy the most are the beautiful pictures of landscapes you show us from your trips. It is priceless for me. Gives me dreams, and view to travel again (I haven't travelled since 2009). Then I would say don't change anything, but don't stop posting about your trips.

I think some post about brittish recipes could be interesting too, even if I must confess a big lack of confidence in brittish food, to tell the truth. But I think it can be of interest. I'm a fan of Gordon Ramsey, by the way. I like his show very much, and watch it regularly.

Concerning the personal posts, I have a more nuanced point of view. I'm of the old generation who thinks it is not a good thing to publish some private things on the net, because it can be used by others against you, and even if it is not used against you, it dimminishes your own freedom, and your own right to keep a private life. And I can't conceive one can do that to oneself. Especcially in a modern society full of medias, cams everywhere, files in banks, administrations, police, and so on. I am very interested in technology, and I have studied a lot this topic, and I can promise that someone a little gifted, can find your traces, follow them, find where you live, and come at your's and knock at your door. Not difficult at all. And absolutely not normal at all ! So according to me, the less you tell about you and your private life, the best it is.

    (To be continued :)

  6. (Part II)

Second, you can obviously share private things with your friends, and with persons who are close to you, but once again (because I remember myself writing this some months ago), your followers are not your friends, and you must not feel obliged to share personal things with them. And you must not feel guilty for an absence. Or feel obliged to apologize for that. A blog is a tool, and not an end to reach. Not a goal in life. So I think you should not take your absence of january so much bad, regarding how we felt.

You're not in debt with us, you had a very good reason to take your distance, and nothing is more important than your own balance and happyness. Your private life is yours, and no one has nothing to deal with it, or to tell about. You have been absent, but no one has been traumatized, the world kept turning, and when you got back, we still were there. So take it easier. Real life, true life will always be more important.

To conclude, I think that more post related to The Doctor could be a very good thing to add to your blog ! :) ) ) )

Especcially something about what the Doctor wears !!! When you create a character, you always have to include in its "characterization" the way he or she is dressed, what accessories he or she wears, these elements reflecting his/ her personality, and behaviour. So the way each Doctor is dressed regarding his personality could be a very interesting topic ! For his fans at least, but maybe it could be very boring for the others ^^ Same story for his companions by the way. For me, it is not hazardous if Donna Noble usually wears trousers, when Amelia Pond wears miniskirts. It's not only an issue of physique, but of behaviour. Amy is more, how could I tell... she's more confident in her own potential, she dares more ! So she showes her legs, but at the same time, she wears tights so she hides her legs. She dares but she remains "classic", prude. Very brittish, and very interesting in terms of characterization. Donna represents the average woman who won her freedom by working in a office. She's not very confident in hersellf, but she makes a lot of efforts to overcome her own nature. She tryes to convince herself and to convince the others that she is an amazon, so she wears trousers to assert herself with her social role. When Amy is naturally strong, and asserts herself with her natural charm (and sexuality, clearly), and dynamism. I have a lot of admiration for the way these characters have been written, and the way they have been portrayed by two wonderful actresses. So, all that to make you understand the kind of stuff I would like to see in JustRach, if I were the Editor in Chief, and if you were in my team of journalists. But once again, maybe I would be the sole interested in those stuff ! 8 )

By the way, I take the opportunity to make a personal advert : if I remember well, you're interested in cinema too, so without giving you an order, take a few minutes to come to my own blog and read the review I wrote about Zach Snyder's Man of Steel. Being a cinema lover, and appreciating the genre "superhero", I tryed to analyze the movie and the author's work. Some things might be of your interest.

  7. Oh ! And I'm sorry about your late friend, of course. It was so obvious that I did not mention it. Those kinds of things are so tragic and... I don't know what to say more 8 (

  8. Rachel,
Congratulations on obtaining your degree. It was a huge undertaking and achievement. You should be very proud. It sounds as though you've had an awfully lot on your plate the past few months in addition to suffering a loss. I am new to you blog, but I would suggest you write about whatever feels right for you. I sometimes spend an entire week writing a blog post in my head only to sit down and write about something entirely different. If I do write about something really personal even if it is a comment on someone else’s blog my next post is usually pretty general. I can only handle so much self-disclosure. And don't worry too much about going away for a while. We all need a break from time to time. When I'm going through a rough period it is all I can do to just make it through the day. I think your true readers will understand.
